When can a Google review be challenged?

A negative Google review can feel personal, especially when you know the full story behind the customer experience. But there is an important difference between a review that feels unfair and a review that may actually breach Google's policies.
Google does not usually remove a review simply because it is negative, frustrating, or one-sided. Reviews are allowed to describe poor experiences, even when a business disagrees with what was written.
Where things become different is when a review crosses a policy line.
A review may be worth challenging if it appears to be fake, posted by someone who was never a customer, written by a competitor, or based on a conflict of interest. It may also qualify if it includes offensive language, private personal information, threats, irrelevant content, or misleading claims.
The key is not just saying, "This review is unfair." The stronger approach is to explain clearly why the review may breach a specific policy and provide the right context.
That is where many businesses struggle. They know something is wrong, but they do not know how to frame it properly.
At The Review Society, we help businesses look at reviews more carefully. We check whether a review may qualify for action, explain the reasoning, and help prepare a clear notice where there is a basis to challenge it.
Not every negative review can be removed. But when a review crosses the line, your business should not have to ignore it.
